The horror....again

I get to move in February. We are leaving for a while and my room mate may not be here when I get back so I am putting MOST of my things in storage....just in case. The last time I did this it sucked so I am a little wiser. I WILL get a rental van and move all the furniture at once instead of trying to throw it in the back of 3 pick up trucks (that sounds like a terrible idea....what was I thinking?) And even if I have to buy dinner, I will not do it alone.

I will leave some things here and still 'make sure' I have a place to come home to if the rommie does not leave, but I don't want him to have to move all of his stuff and mine too!

X-mas X2

Being in the Military is hard at times but this year it is kinda cool. I will not be with my family for Christmas so we get two this year. (Got 3, but who's counting?!) On December 20th we celebrated Christmas at my grandparents. We had wrapping paper and grins all over the living room as my sisters and mom opened the boxes that had been scattered under the tree.

Hope wanted to erase her wish list from the marker board on the fridge because she knew there was no way she was going to get the trampoline or 'Etnies' shoes she wanted. Just look at her face when she opened the box.

As I wrote in 'Christmas out of the holidays', it is not about the gifts or the money, but look at her face. This is the first time in 4 years I have been home for the holidays and I miss this. They always get stuff from where ever I am, but this is priceless. This is Christmas. Not the gift, but the joy. Even though she did not get the exact colors she wanted, she refused to return them and get the ones she really liked. I guess these grew on her.
Hope and Nicole: Merry Christmas. No matter where I am remember that I love you!

Christmas out of the holidays

What kinda shit is this. My mom told me some crap about our town taking "Merry Christmas" out of the holidays. While I was not able to find anything about this in the local news paper online, something did strike my funny and now I understand it.

I went to the local Wal-Mart (that just opened a few weeks ago) and some young man was talking to the greeter at the door. The conversation was short and went something like this:

Greeter: Merry Christmas.
Man: I am so glad you said that. This is starting to make me sick.
Greeter: I have said Merry Christmas for more years than you could imagine and I refuse to say anything else unless it is of my own free will.

As I was driving down the road talking to my mom a few days later with my younger sister in the back seat, the subject came up. My mom started telling me that someone in town wanted to take the "Marry Christmas" out of the holidays and have it just "Happy Holidays". Then my little sister said, "We won't have Christmas any more?"

How sad is it when we as people take away what is really important. It is not about the X-Box 360's and your spoiled ass rotten child. Christmas is about being with the ones you love and Showing them how much you love them. If you child tells you that you only love them if you get them a personnel DVD player, then you failed as a parent to raise an appreciative member of society. I am up set because I know what I got for X-mas, not because it is or is not what I wanted, but because my boyfriend could not keep it a secret for 2 weeks and told me. And I am not really upset, just a bit disappointed because I will not have the element of surprise.

I go to work every day and serve my country. I do what I am told to do to meet the mission whether I agree with it or not. That is my job. You can't take "Merry Christmas" out of the holidays and if you as AMERICAN's allow this to happen. Shame on you!

A bit different

Rita is not done

Everyone knows about the hurricaines that hit Louisisana this year. I went home and the experience was different.
The first thing I wanted to eat was Sonic. They were all closed. Why do you ask if the city is pretty much back up and running? They have no one to work. Everyone in the city is on clean up crews, roofing crews, or collecting unemployment bacause they are too lazy to go back to work.
Burger King will give you 1500 if you sign a 6 month full time contract. McDonalds will give you an extra $250 each week! For the first 2 weeks after the storm, you goind not go into Lake Charles. After that, you could like and leave for about a week or so. The first time clean up crew got hot meals was when someone grilled burgers in a local resturant parking lot. Other than that, they were eating MRE's! Most places close at 9 or so and some do splits so they can be open for lunch and supper.

The Nutcracker

Cas

What can be said about Cas? First of all, he is doing REALLY good in Rota.

If you know anything about Cas, out friendship has been extremely bittersweet! (This is being nice!) He has become one of my dearest friends. And causing him more pain is the last thing I have ever wanted to do.

A few weeks ago I had to do something that I did not plan on doing and was truly scared to do with all we had been through and all he has been through, but I figured it was for the best. I told him about Ronnie (Fawson). That was a difficult e-mail to send but the reply was good.

IT WAS HARD......

Work some times gets in the way

We were doing a big training evolution on the ship and I had to go out to a gun mount to get a simulated patient. We got there, did what we had to do and as we were about to leave training ended.

A year or so later I was a Flying Squad training and one of my guys (Reed) on the team told me that one of his friends had been asking about me. Of course I asked who and blah, blah, blah. He told me it was Fawson and I had no clue who he was talking about.

A week or so later I was standing in a passageway on the ship looking for stuff that I needed to fix and Reed walked by. He stopped as usually and we talked for a bit and he brought up Fawson again. So I told him to tell Fawson to stop being a puss and come and talk to me. Then I said something like "If he is cute enough I might even go to the Christmas Party with him." Reed said something about going down to his office and seeing what he was doing and left. I went back to work.

That day or a few after I got an e-mail from Fawson. I am not sure what it said, but apparently they did walk by shortly after Reed left but I 'looked busy' working so they did not stop.

We hung out a bit and chatted on e-mail. When we pulled into San Francisco we hung out the last day we were there and had a good time. As we were walking up one of the 50 hills we concord trying to find China Town, he grabbed my hand (he later told me that I pulled away), and I got the butterflies in my tummy. It was kinda cool and why does this sound like I am still in High School?!

So we get back to Washington and hang out a good bit of out off time. It has been interesting and a lot of fun. The day we actually started dating is a debate and neither one of us know so Dec 1st is!

Fire Department?

While out to sea one of my jobs is to respond on the ship's fire department. While this is more work for me and it does take me away from my normal duties a few times a week, I enjoy it. I get to meet people from other work areas of the command that I would now know other wise and some times get to do things that no one else gets to.

My job there is medical of course, yet I always find other things to get my hands into. I frequently end up carrying supplies for the guys that are actually going into the space to fight the fire or stop the flooding. Sometimes I just block the passage ways and tell people that they have to go around. One cool thing about this is I get to be a bitch about it and somehow I gained the nick name 'Bull Dog'. (This is quite different from 'Monkey', but oh well. Besides, no one calls me that anymore.)

One day we were in the middle of training and my name was called. Due to my primary job I don't get called out much so it was strange. One of the guys standing next to me looked at me and said "Let's go" (his name was called out too). We walked to the other side of where our gear was set up and hung out with the other 6 people who's names were called. After about 5 minutes of waiting around we were told to walk up to the flight deck behind the DCA (don't worry about what it stands for, you won't get it). So we walk up there, (4 flights of stairs in a hurry) and walk to a weapons elevator and get our gear. I had 3 20 pound bags to my self! We carried it to a helo and threw it in. Unfortunately the fun stopped there.

What was planned? A trip to another ship that was out to sea with us. It was set up for us to fly by helo with out gear, go onto the other ship, take a tour, then return to work. How cool would that have been? I have been pretty lucky during my time in the Navy. I was in New Orleans for two years. Only 3 hours from home while I was adjusting to a new life style and celebrating Mardi Gras. Then I went to Okinawa, Japan and met wonderful people (Ed and Steph....I miss you), learned how to SCUBA dive in one of the worlds top 10, and experienced a great culture. Then Washington. Being at sea is hard, but for the first time I felt like I was actually doing what I joined the Navy for when we went to Indonesia. I was making a difference! But this adventure would have been right up there as one of my favorites. As medical you are selected to be on the 'Flying Squad' (fire department), so to be selected as one of six out of 50 in that group it was cool.

INSURVE

INSURVE, or my headache, is an inspection that all Naval ships go through every 5 years to insure the military and you, the tax payers, get your monies worth. It like all Naval inspections looks at things that you would never imagine. For instance, each and every electrical outlet has to be stenciled "115V AC" (or what ever is appropriate).
My job currently is to go through and find all the improvements we need to do for insurve (like paint on a valve) or work requests for when we pull in for maintence so we can get big jobs done (like replacing the tile in the passage way that 5 thousand people walk on everyday). It has been interesting doing this, but I must admit, that I like taking care of people more that I like to walk around and look for misplaced paint.
I have however been on a few projects that were kinda fun. I had to 'lag' or insulate some pipes. The 'glue' for this is pink. HOT pink......I still hate pink. It was kinda fun though because it was almost like playing with paper meche'. You have to cut the lagging to fit around the insulation that fits around the pipes. Then you have to 'glue' it on. The second to last thing is to cover up the seams. Once this dries you have to paint it........Could I have just used the paint in the first place.
